Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.

Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.

The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Officers then located many other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials report early analysis show the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are presently not informed of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.

Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for details.

A high-ranking official stated the attack made him stunned and required to be addressed rapidly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
