Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, but then he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Comeback

At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He was on the last one at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.

He joined originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His True Position

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
