Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
