The global fast-food chain has removed a Christmas advertisement produced via Artificial Intelligence following receiving significant criticism on social media.

The 45-second film was created with the help of AI video tools and was initially released online for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, audiences online criticized the use of AI in the commercial. Many described it as "uncanny" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This moment serves as an key learning as we investigate the effective application of generative technology," stated a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was created for the brand by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed various things that can go wrong during the holidays, using the theme "the most terrible time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI Commercials

Campaigns that incorporate AI tools have emerged as a increasing trend among prominent companies, especially for the Christmas period.

  • Coca-Cola has similarly launched consecutive AI-created holiday commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: As videos made using current AI video tools are more likely to degrade the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be about short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also sparked concerns about the replacement of human roles in the creative sector, with some observers pointing out it might affect opportunities for camera crews.

Defense from the Production Company

After the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

According to her, the creation took "over a month and a half" and involved generating "countless iterations" which were then shaped afterward "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't an experiment," she said. "We consider it a finished piece."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was largely panned, the response for some AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a recent AI-created holiday ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis garnered a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from online commenters.

However, several companies have also encountered backlash for employing the technique in marketing. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some called "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The episode highlights the continuing conversation within the marketing and creative sectors about the trade-off between new tools and audience reception.
