Trump Demands Imprisonment of Windy City Leader and State Executive as Military Forces Arrive in City

Ex-President Donald Trump on midweek called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump wrote on his platform early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic faction.

These remarks come alongside the arrival of National Guard troops in the Windy City area following directives from the current government, notwithstanding vehement protests from Illinois authorities including the governor and mayor.

"This represents not the first instance where Trump has sought to have an African American leader wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on Wednesday. "I am staying put."

The governor responded via social platforms, declaring: "I refuse to back down. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What's next on the road toward complete autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard units from Texas had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, an army base approximately 50 miles from the city, as the federal government advances with its aggressive crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden hellhole", even though police data indicate significant drops in many offenses, including murders.

That day, two hundred Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the region, with another 300 Illinois guard forces preparing to mobilize, per reports. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid police functions but would protect federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with state guard patches were spotted at the military facility in the town. Trucks marked "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off portable toilets and essential items. Mobile units were set up in rows. Additional fencing was installed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered flight restrictions over the army reserve center for security reasons until early December.

Federal authorities has intensified immigration enforcement in the city in recent weeks, sparking demonstrations, especially near an immigration center in Broadview.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit targeting the administration, attempting to halt the military dispatch, asking a federal judge to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on the city and state, labeling it "unlawful and risky".

A court hearing on their case is set for the next day.

The mayor also issued an executive order on that day prohibiting ICE officers and related personnel from using municipal facilities as operation bases for enforcement actions.

The governor has charged the president of using troops as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on the previous day, Pritzker said that Trump is trying to "rationalize and normalize the presence of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The nearly 150-year-old federal law restricts the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. However, Trump has stated he would be willing to activate the Insurrection Act, which permits a commander-in-chief to dispatch active duty military in regions that are failing to put down an uprising or are defying national authority.

After beginning his second term, the president has sent or discussed sending military units to at least 10 urban centers, such as Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and California cities like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, claiming that the military presence is essential to fight violence and defend immigration agents.

Data indicates that most violent crime across the US has declined in the past few years. In Chicago, for example, murders were reduced 31% to under three hundred through late summer, according to law enforcement reports.

A recent poll released on that day found that most Americans oppose the sending of military forces without an foreign danger.
