Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to question certain calls made by the official, following the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
